Kattouw, Anton Hendrik, born 17-02-1915 in Haren, Netherlands, to principal Albert Kattouw (25-08-1885 in Slood, municipality of Hoogeveen, 19-05-1944, Zevenhuizen, municipality of Leek) and Hiltje Veenstra (05-02-1889 Jubbega-Schurega). Brother of Sietze Herman Kattouw and Sietze Herman Kattouw, Anton was married to Hubertha Voetelink, born 04-28-1914 in Nieuw Helvoet, the marriage solemnized on 11-10-1939 in The Hague. married they lived in Amsterdam, Sophialaan 34-III. The couple had two children.

In May 1940, he served as a lieutenant at sea III on a submarine of the Royal Navy, he was a second mate and radio operator at the Netherlands Steamship Company.

The Koninklijke Nederlandse Stoomboot-Maatschappij (KNSM; Royal Netherlands Steamship Company) was an Amsterdam-based shipping company that existed from 1856 to 1981. It was once the largest company in Amsterdam and one of the top five shipping lines in the Netherlands. The company operated mid-sized cargo ships that had limited passenger accommodations. At its peak in 1939, the company had 79 vessels. Of these, 48 were lost in World War II.

Anton made contacts with the underground resistance and became a member of an intelligence service and district leader of the LO (National Organization for Assistance to Refugees), Enkhuizen branch. Later, he left for Amsterdam because it became too dangerous in Enkhuizen. He went there to operate the transmitter of the Packard group. The Groep Packard was a Dutch spy network during World War II. Founded by two Delft university students, Hendrik “Henk” Deinum

and Marinus Vader, the group gathered military and weather intelligence for the Dutch government and Allied air forces in London.

In 1949, Deinum was awarded the Bronze Lion. He often wondered why two members of the Albrecht Group in

March 1943 founded by Lieutenant Hendrik Geert  “Henk” de Jonge, received the Military William Order, and no one from the Packard Group. He went back to Delft and graduated in 1950.

Henk Deinum survived the war and worked for the Ministry of Defense after the war and later became a patent attorney. He lived in Wassenaar and passed away on 21-03-1992, age 75.

Marinus Vader also survived the war and was heard by a Parliamentary Inquiry Committee in 1949 about the Packard Group. After the war, he was a business manager and sales manager. Marinus Vader passed away on 20-03-1991 at the age of 71.

Lieutenant Hendrik Geert  “Henk” de Jonge,  also survived the war and passed away in Capelle aan den IJssel, on 12-12-2010, age 93.

Kattouw worked, among others, with staff member Piet “pseudonym Piet Mol” Smit (May 15, 1921, Ede),

the former district leader of LO-Enkhuizen. In eleven weeks’ time, broadcasts were made from at least fourteen addresses in Hengelo and the surrounding area. At the moment it was already decided to move the transmitter to Winterswijk, members of the SD Kattouw, Smit, and employe Julka Helene Katharina Snijder-Bratu caught them in the act.

In September 1944, Kattouw left for Hengelo to start broadcasting there. On November 26, he was caught red-handed by the SD (Sicherheitsdienst) from Almelo. Kattouw was arrested and eventually transferred to the detention center in Zwolle.

Kattouw was transferred to the House of Detention in Zwolle. The House of Detention in Zwolle was located on Menno van Coehoornsingel (later Menno van Coehoornsingel 9) during World War II. The building served as a prison and transit camp. Nowadays, it is the world-famous restaurant and hotel De Librije (Spinhuisplein 1). From that location, he was transported to the execution site on 08-03-1945. As a reprisal for the attack on SS-Befehlshaber Rauter, Johan Baptist Albin “Hanns

at Woeste Hoeve, Kattouw, age 30 and Smit, age 23, were executed by a German firing squad along with 115 other detainees on the Woeste Hoeve . Posthumously, by Royal Decree No. 9 dated 02-01-1950, the Bronze Cross was awarded to Kattouw.

Anton Hendrik Kattouw is buried at the Cemetery Old Oak and Dunes in The Hague. Laan van Eik en Duinen 40, 2564 GT, The Hague.
