Mellet Francis J. “Frank”, born 07-07-1920, in New York, New York County, New York, United States, tto Michael Bartholomy Mellett (1893-1960) and Mary A. Mellett (1891-1963) in Long Island, New York. He had 2 brothers, Michael John Mellett (1918-1961) and  Private 158 INF , 40 INF Division John E. Mellett (1922-1945) John died in battle too on 12-03-1945 (age  22) in battle in Central Luzon, Philippines.

Francis around 1942, joined the airborne.in the later famous 506th Regiment “Easy Company, under command of Thomans Meehan III   of the 101 Airborne Division Mellet trained with Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne, at Camp Toccoa, and was assigned to the 3rd Platoon as an assistant machine gunner to Corporal Walter Scott “Smokey” Gordon.

Corporal Gordon survived the war and died 19-04-1997 (aged 77) in Biloxi, Mississippi,

After training at Fort Benning, and Camps Mackall and Camp Shanks, he headed to Aldbourne England to await the invasion of Europe and having fun with english ladies. .

Francis landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944. When he landed, he immediately threw away the tripod to his .30 cal. Machine gun. He first ran into Edward Joseph Tipper, and then was able to group with Walter Gordon,  Floyd Merrill “Tab” Talbert, Forrest Leroy “Goody” Guth

David Morris, Daniel West, most right, C.T Smith and Arthur C Youman, as well as several other paratroopers. After meeting up in Ste. Marie-du-Monte,  Mellet helped secure the town of Carentan, and survived the rest of the campaign. 7 June 1944 in the square of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, paratroopers of “Easy” Co. 506th PIR, 101st Airborne Division, F. Mellet then landed in Holland on September 17 and liberated my hometown Eindhoven..   After the campaign, Mellet, who had never been wounded during the previous two campaigns, expressed to others that he was concerned that when he was eventually hit, it would be fatal.

While taking the town of Foy on 13-01-1945, Mellet, age 24, was killed instantly when he was shot through the head by a sniper. This same sniper also killed Kenneth Jay Webb  and Carl Sawosko   before being killed himself by Shifty Powers.  Eight weeks after the death of Frank, his younger brother, John, was killed in action in Luzon, Phillipines on 12-03-1945 at the age of 22.

His body was transported back to New York where it is buried at Long Island National Cemetery, East Farmingdale, Suffolk County, New York, USA. Section J 13548. with his parents and his brothers.
