Boyle, Leo Delaine, born 06-10-1913 in Roseburg, Douglas County, Oregon, USA  Leo was married in 1944 to Winifried Louise, born Hawkins, Boyle (1912–1996).

Leo was an original Camp Toccoa member of Easy and was the non-com in charge of gas safety training, earning him the nickname “Fearless Phosgene” Camp Toccoa (formerly Camp Toombs) was a basic training camp for United States Army paratroopers during World War II, located five miles (8 km) west of Toccoa, Georgia. Among the units to train at the camp was the 506th Infantry Regiment. The regiment’s Company E (“Easy Company”) was portrayed in the 2001 HBO miniseries Band of Brothers.

While stationed in Aldbourne, England, Leo met a girl called Winifred “Winn” Hawkins  and they were married in May, 1944. Their wedding day didn’t escape the high jinx of Leo’s buddies though. When Winn arrived at the church, Wild Bill Guarnere 

Guarnere, William J ”Wild Bill”. set off coloured smoke grenades, threw her in a jeep, and drove her 10 miles away, leaving her there to make her own way back to the church. She made it back and the two married later that day, and were together until her passing in 1996. Leo made his first combat jump into Normandy on D-Day as platoon sergeant of 1st platoon. Leo was wounded in the defence of Carentan, in the Battle of Bloody Gulch, and evacuated to England. He rejoined for the jump into The Netherlands for Operation Market Garden in September, 1944. On October 5, he was Richard Dick Winters right hand man during the Crossroads fighting on “The Island”, where Easy was helping to hold the line just south of the Rhine river, and encountered German troops infiltrating the Allied line. He was severly wounded in the leg by the shelling during that fight and was again evacuated to Engand. This time he didn’t return to combat and was sent back to the U.S for further treatment.  After the war, Leo worked as a teacher. He attended the Easy Company anual reunions   and in picture two can be seen sitting on the far right, with Robert “Red” Wright, looking on as George Luz messes about with William Bill Guarnere at an Easy 1982 reunion. Leo Boyle passed away on 22-12-1997 age 84..Currahee

Leo was a member of the 101st Paratroop Infantry, Company E. “Easy Compagny. Leo served in Holland as well as participating in the D-day invasion of Normandy.Mr. Boyle graduated from the University of Oregon in 1952. He taught high school in Salem from 1958-1960; Roseburg from 1964-1968; Dallas from 1960-1980 and retired as the special education director at Central School District in 1979. He also ran and organized the summer migrant school in mid-1960’s. He moved to Keizer in 1980.Mr Boyle was an avid fly fisherman and gardener. He was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa, the 101st Airborne Assoc. and the Polk Association for Retarded Citizens. He is survived by his son Chris Boyle of South Beach, Oregon. His wife Winifred preceded him in death in January 1996.
