Herward von Bittenfeld, born 16-05-1890 in Gera, son of Werner* Friedrich Herwarth von Bittenfeld and Josefine Freiin von Stein-Liebenstein zu Barchfeld, entered the Army, age 18, on 13-03-1909, as Platoon Leader and Company Leader, then adjutant in the 5th Guards Grenadier Regiment. Herward was allowed in the new Reichswehr
and at the beginning of World Was II he was commander of Military District Command Breslau, until 31-03-1940. Airport Area Command II/2 in Warsaw until 03-11-1942. Herwarth von Bittenfeld was arrested and held in the Wehrmacht Remand Camp in Berlin, the arrest and the later condemnation took place on operation of Heinrich Himmler
and Reinhard Heydrich´s SS Reichs Security Head Office with the reproach of Polish friendliness and sabotage of Führer (see Adolf Hitler) (did you know) Instructions, because he had opposed the NS Civil Administration activities in the General Government Poland. Condemned by the 4th Senate of the Reichs War Court, under jurist Roland Freisler
because of military disobedience to 3 years imprisonment and loss of rank and of all honours of the first and second World Wars. The judgement was confirmed by Adolf Hitler on 31-01-1943. Completion of punishment in Torgau, Fortress of Zinna
, until 31-12-1943. He then was released with front line service. He was a ordinary soldier with the Flying Replacement Battalion XI in Neumünster. His son Lutze was killed in battle, age 19, on 26-07-1942. He again was brought before a Court Martial because of violation of the Reichs War Court, because of his political background. The 2nd judgement was not confirmed however, probably due to the intervention of friends in the RLM. Herwarth now was detached from front probation to be extracted by the Leader of the Gestapo and SS Oberführer Rudolf Diels.
He was detached again to front service with the 1st Flak Battalion 1001 and the invasion front in Normandy until 02-05-1945. Front probation was regarded as fulfilled and the RLM
requested the abolition of his loss of rank which no longer took place in the confusions of the last months of the war.

Herwarth landed in American captivity on 09-05-1945 and released in July 1945 he retired in Munich, where he at the age of 66 died, on 15-01-1957. Herwarth von Bittenfeld is buried with his wife Ulricke, born Kyaw, who died age old age 95, on 13-12-1995, on the Ostfriedhof of Munich, close by the graves of Hitler’s WWI sergeant Max Amann
