Rozeman, Albert Jan, born 29-03-1914, Zaandam, Netherlands, to Steven Rozeman and his wife Susanna, born Bols. Albert had one brother Geesje Rozeman.

Albert was a social affairs official and lived in Hoogeveen. He was active in the resistance in Drenthe as the local leader of the LO. Together with Hendrik “Henk” Raak, he multiplied and distributed illegal pamphlets. Hendrik Raak (Hollandscheveld, 21-07-1920 – Overveen, 06-06-1944) was a Dutch resistance fighter during World War II. Hendrik “Henk” Raak, age 23, was captured and tortured and confessed, after which he was sentenced to death by the Police Court in Camp Vught. The execution ultimately took place in the dunes near Overveen. After the war, his remains were exhumed and identified there, and he was reburied in section 23 of the honorary cemetery in Bloemendaal.

As chairman of the Reformed Young Men’s Association, he ensured that, with one exception, all members refused to work and went into hiding. He collaborated with Johannes Post, among others, for the LO, KP, and press work. He distributed ‘Vrij Nederland’ and ‘Trouw’, participated in the National Resistance of the AR party, and was the driving force behind the local civil service resistance. He played a major role in the establishment of a KP and was its spiritual leader.

On Monday, 20-03-1944, the Sicherheitsdienst conducted a search of an uncle and aunt of Albert Jan Rozeman in Beilen, where they read his name on a birthday calendar. When asked who that was, the aunt said it was her nephew from Hoogeveen. The notorious SD officers Slagter and Van Droffelaar immediately left for Hoogeveen, where they thot they could finally arrest the KP member and ‘notorious terrorist’ Albert Rozeman (who was a cousin of Albert Jan). A call came from Beilen, saying Albert Jan had to leave, but the message arrived too late. At the beginning of the evening, Albert Jan Rozeman was arrested in his home and severely beaten in the process. When his father, Steven Rozeman, made comments about it, he was also taken away.

Marten Slagter (Emmen, 30-03-1904 – unknown) was a police officer and a member of the SD. Slagter worked for the police documentation service and was seconded to the Sicherheitsdienst (SD). Together with Leonardus (Leo) Adrianus Poos  , Slagter was responsible for at least two hundred victims. After the war, Slagter was sentenced to death, but after several appeals to the Court of Cassation, the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in 1951. In 1962, Slagter was released anyway.

Leonardus (Leo) Adrianus Poos (Hatert, 16-04-1901 – Rijswijk, 19-01-1990) was a Dutch police officer who collaborated closely with the German occupiers in The Hague during World War II. He was sentenced to death after the war, but the sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment. He passed away 19 januari 1990, age 88 in Rijswijk, Netherlands

Albert Jan Rozeman was immediately transferred to Assen. After a month, he was transported with his father to the Scholtenshuis in Groningen. After severe torture, Albert Jan and his father Steven were transferred to the concentration camp in Amersfoort at the end of May 1944 and after a few days were sent on to Kamp Vught, then to Scheveningen, back to Vught, then to ‘s-Hertogenbosch, and finally to Overveen, where he was executed in the dunes with many others on 06-06-1944. His father, Steven Rozeman, born in Oosterhesselen on 04-03-1882, was transferred to Vught before recovering from the injuries sustained during the beatings and on 06-09-1944, to the Oranienburg concentration camp, where he, age 30, died of exhaustion on 30-01-1945.

Albert Jan Rozeman was buried in the Overveen honorary cemetery, in the dunes near Bloemendaal. By Royal Decree No. 58 of 25-07-1952, Rozeman was posthumously awarded the Resistance Cross. His name is listed on the Roll of Honor of the Fallen 1940-1945.
