Greer, Francis Upton “Frank”, born on 24-09-1895 in Washington, District of Columbia, the son of William Alexander Greer (1863-1944) and Cecelia, born Throckmorton, Greer. (1864-1953) Frank was married to May Imogene, born. Mann, Greer ( 1896–1990). Frank had one sister and one brother, Annie Belle Greer (1891-1892) and John James Greer (1889-1932).

Frank and May had one daughter and two sons, Francis Upton “Frank” Greer Jr. (1918-1922), Mary McCaskey “Gene” Greer Plante (1922-2016), Colonel Charles Francis Greer (1923-2005),

Major General Thomas Upton “Tug ” Greer (1928-2014) and Frank Upton Greer III (1932-2001). Major General Thomas “Tug” Greer as his father received the Merit of Honor 

Brigadier General Greer had three sons to graduate from West Point Academy. Two made the Army their career and one reached the rank of a Major General (Thomas U Greer), one star above his dad, Brigade General Greer. Son Colonel Charles Greer graduated from West Point Military Academy and married Betty on the same day, 05-6-1945. Charles retired in 1974 after serving in numerous locations, including occupied Germany, Son Thomas “Tug” was a 1950 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and a US Army Veteran retiring as a highly decorated Infantry Officer after 31 years of service.

Greer’s son-in-law, Patrick McCaskey, memorial number, 129602827, was killed in action during World War II while serving with the 88th Infantry Division. under command of Major General Paul Wilkins. Kendall  Patrick McCaskey was married to Brigadier General Greer’s daughter Annie, Belle.

Frank Greer was commissioned a First lieutenant, in 1917 and advanced through the grades to Brigadier General in 1943. In World War II Brigade General Greer was Deputy Commanding General of the 79th infantry Division   from 17-04-1944- 05-01-1945.

The 79th Infantry Division (formerly known as the 79th Division) was an infantry formation of the United States Army Reserve in World Wars I and II. Since 2009, it has been active as the 79th Theater Sustainment Command. Casualities of the 79 Division during their European campaig, total casualities in battle 15,203, killed in action 2,476, wounded in action 10,971, missing in action 579 and prisoner of war 1.186.

Brigadier General Frank Greere recieved his Silver Star ” for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 79th Infantry Division during World War II. When his regiment was savagely attacked by enemy armored units, General Greer personally reconnoitered the situation and moved his command post to a position affording maximum observation, although exposed to constant enemy artillery fire and aerial attack. Despite a painful wound received in this action, General Greer remained in this position until the enemy attack was completely repulsed. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.”

Greer, Francis Upton “Frank”. survived the war and died 17-05-1949 (age 53) in Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida, USA and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, United States, Section 8, Site 493.
