Dettmann, Julius, born 23-01-1894 in Königsberg, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire the son of transport operatort Friedrich Dettmann and Bertha Dettman, born Lenzner. Julius was bapised by his parents and brought up as a Protestant..Julius was married on 23-04-1920 to  Auguste Marie Gertrud Dettman, born Goss ( born 03-05-1896). The.couple had one son Frank Julius.born 21-03-1921 in Königsberg.

From the age of 6 to 14 Dettmann attented primary school, then in 1908 he joined a drapery shop in Königsberg Pruisen as a sales apprentice. After his apprenticeship ended in 1912 Julius worked as a trader or merchant for various companies. In Ocktober 1914 Julius volenteered for two years with the 1 st Ostpreusisches Feldartillerie Regiment Nr 16. In June 1914 in Jüterborg he was transferred to the field artillerie school in Jüterbog with which he also went in the field. After Dettman had participated in the campaign with this troop in a year, he was transferred to the anti-aircraft unit, where he stayed until the end of World War I. Durig World War I he was promoted to the rank of officer. He was promoted to corporal, later to Vizewachtmeister( sergeant petty officer) and in 1918 Dettmann was discharged from the army, In 1919 Dettmann rejoined his own unit in Königberg and in March 1919 he was assigned to the Militairische Polizeistelle ( militairy police). After the unit was transformed into the Landsgrenzpolizei ( State Border Police) in Oktober 1919, Dettmann was taken into police service and at the same time permalently discharged from Heeresdienst (army service).

Julius Dettmann was bearer of the Ehrenkreuz des Weltkrieges ( World War Cross of Honor) and the Iron Cross 2 Classe. With his lengh of 1.74 meter he was guite sportive and obtained the SA-Sportabzeichen in Bronze, the bronze state sport badge, aswell the bronze German rescue company badge.

On 23-04-1920, Dettmann, in the meanwhile in the rank of watch master in the border police married his wife Auguste. During his work in the criminal police Dettmann was transferred several times, his last transfere before the beginning of .Second World War was on 01-05-1934, from the Wuppertal criminal police to the Koblenz state police. On 02-01-1936 the young family moved a house 5 Schwerzstrasse in Koblenz.

Dettmann was a member of the Nazi Party (NSDAP) and his Party number was No: 722240. Thereafter, he joined the Schutzstaffel (SS); his SS number was 414,783. He was attached to Section IVB4 or the Gestapo, after having served in Poland and Russia. He was stationed in Amsterdam during the German occupation of the Netherlands and was promoted to SS-Obersturmführer (lieutenant) on 09-11-1942.

On 04-08-1944, he received a phone call reporting that there were Jews hidden in the premises of 263 Prinsengracht in Amsterdam. The individuals in question were Anne Frank, her parents, mother Edith father Otto who survived  Frank, Otto Heinrich. , sister Margot , and four others. mother Pels   and

After two years, the group was betrayed by probably by Willem van Maaren or the Jewish lady Lena Hartog-Van Bladeren  a cleaning women in the same hidding building. To report a single Jew to the SD brought in a 75 Dutch guilders, about 30 dollars in that time.

Dettmann immediately dispatched a squad led by SS-Oberscharführer (staff sergeant) Karl Silberbauer, Silberbauer, Karl Josef telling Silberbauer that the call had come from “a reliable source”. Silberbauer and his contingent of NSB plain-clothes officers raided the building and arrested the eight people in hiding who, after questioning at SD headquarters, were deported to the Westerbork transit camp and from there, to various labour and concentration camps.

Dettmann was also in charge of the execution of fifteen resistance fighters, among them Johannes Post, an idol of the Dutch Resistance. The execution took place 16-07-1944, near Overveen. After the war in Europe ended, Dettmann was arrested in the Netherlands and remained a prisoner of war. However, he hanged himself in Amsterdam at the Havenstraat prison on 25-07-1945, age 51, at 4am, before being taken to court.

He was buried 31-07-1945, at the Noorder Begraafplaats cemetery in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. On 17-08-1956, his remains were transferred to Ysselsteyn German war cemetery.
