Death and burial ground of Tunnis Buursma.

Buursma appeared at 23:30 in the company of three land guards, the mayor of the municipality of Onstwedde and a chief sergeant of the military police at the home of Lukas Riensema on the A-weg 13 in Musselkanaal to arrest the ‘terrorist’ (resistance fighter) and former military police Dirk Cornelis de Ruiter.

The Landwacht knew that he was hiding at that address. When Buursma searched him, During the attempted arrest, in which Luken Riensema and his wife were arrested, De Ruiter pulled out a pistol and fired a number of shots. Buursma was fatally wounded. De Ruiter, who went by the alias Henk de Boer, managed to escape through a window. On 24-10-1920 Dirk de Ruiter was born in Frederiksoord (dr). On 13-07-1944 Dirk was arrested in Onstwedde. Dirk de Ruiter, age 23, died in Horsten during a firefight with the Germans. The dismissed military policeman De Ruiter is not a wild young man, no, very shy and silent. But when they try to arrest him, he leaves an indelible impression. Between 11-10-1944 and 14-10-1944 Luken Riensema was transported from Amersfoort to Neuengamme. On 29-06-1985 Luken Riensema passed away. Luken Riensema was then 74 years old.

Buursma was buried with much NSB display. Beforehand, there was an opportunity to parade past the bier in the Assen town hall on the Brink.

This was followed by a funeral service in the town hall. The remains were transported to the cemetery on a farm cart, followed by a number of prominent NSB members, such as ir. Anton Adriaan Mussert, founder of the W.A. magazine De Zwarte Soldaat  Arie Johannes Zondervan, who died in 1983 in Berlin Germany, inspector-general of the NSB Cornelis “Kees” van Geelkerken,

, commander of the Germanic SS Johannes Hendrikus “Henk” Feldmeijer

and SS Obergruppenführer Johann Albin Baptist “Hanns” Rauter. Rauter posthumously awarded Buursma the Kriegsverdienstkreuz second class with swords for his ‘dutiful work in the service of the Germanic community’.

The inspector general of the Landwacht Van Geelkerken stated in his speech that Buursma “had fallen as a result of the incitement to murder and manslaughter by Pieter Sjoerd Gerbrandy   associates”. From 1955 until his death Gerbrandy was Minister of State. Mussert, leader of the NSB, believed that Buursma’s death should be placed in the same order as William of Orange, the De Witt brothers and De Ruyter and their deaths. “When one does something for this people one is attacked or murdered”, according to Mussert.
