Assies, Markus “Max” born on 26-01-1919 in Ooststellingwerf/ Friesland, Netherlands, the son of Jans Assies and Janatiena Dokter. Markus was unmarried and worked as a civil servant in a sub-department of the Government Office for Food Supply in Assen. His faith was reformed. He lived at Oosterparallelweg 59 in Assen.

On 23-10-1939, Markus Assies was appointed Ensign at the Weapons of Infantry. During the occupation he became a member of the resistance, belonging to the LO/KP-Drenthe/gang resistance and the National Support Fund. Assies, resistance name “Max”, was active in sabotage actions, espionage and aid to fallen Allied pilots and Jews in hiding, resistance fighters and people who wanted to avoid employment for the Germans, in Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen. Together with his brother, forest ranger Gerrit Assies, he housed many of them in underground shelters in the Staatsbossen near Appelscha.

At the end of 1944, the Blood Group Norg, an extremely violent group of Landwachters, operates in Drenthe. In a short time, the group becomes infamous for its crackdown, torture and even executions. It characterizes the atmosphere at the end of the war, in which NSB members, together with the German occupiers, do everything they can to inflict as much damage as possible on what they call ‘terrorists’: resistance fighters and people in hiding. Children Assies, Gerrit, born 18-05-1914, Jan born.26-01-1916, Albert:, born.06-03-1917, later mayor of  Loppersum and Markus: born.26-01-1919. Gerrit passed away at the age of 87 on 18-10-1987 in Hoogeveen. Father Jans after his arrest he ends up in prison camp Neuengamme where he died of exhaustion on 30-01-1945, age 57. After the war Jans Assies was reburied at the Protestant Cemetery Veenhuizen.

Markus Assies was arrested on 28-02-1944 during a raid by the Sicherheitsdienst on a house where he was present at a meeting of the resistance. Markus Assies and his fellow fighters then came into the hands of the so-called “Blood Group Norg” by whom he was tortured. The Blood Group Norg operated in the Mansion of the Tonckens Family, where they tortured captured resistance members in the basement during interrogation. He was then transferred to the House of Detention in Groningen and was regularly interrogated in the Scholtenhuis, the headquarters of the Sicherheispolizei in Groningen. Between 1931 and 1945, the Sicherheitsdienst (SD) evolved from a modest National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP) intelligence service to the state intelligence service of Nazi Germany with 51 main departments and 519 regional branches, several thousand agents and several tens of thousands of informants. The Sicherheitsdienst was founded in March 1931 by Heinrich Himmler under the name Ic-Dienst. On 09-06-1934 a single party information service was established, the so-called Sicherheitsdienst (SD), with the SD-Amt as the base and under the command of Reinhard Heydrich.

 On 21-05-1944, Markus Assies was transferred to Polizeiliches Durchgangslager Amersfoort (PDA) and then to the Vught Concentration Camp. The Polizeistandgericht ‘s-Hertogenbosch sentenced him, together with 21 others, to death on 02-06-1944. On June 6, 1944, he was executed, together with 28 others, in the dunes near Overveen, Municipality of Bloemendaal. His death was recorded in The Hague on 06-08-1944 by deed A 1663, stating that he had died in the Municipality of The Hague.

His mother Jantiena Dokter received the award at the time. On 04-05-2017, a plaque was placed on the memorial in Haule on which his name is written.

Markus Assies was executed in Overveen on the day of the invasion of Normandy, June 6, 1944. In 1946 he was reburied in Overveen in Bloemendaal and was posthumously awarded the Resistance Cross. The Resistance Cross is a very high decoration, awarded to a small group of resistance fighters. has been awarded, about a hundred people. In Veenhuizen there is a monument on which Jans and Marcus Assies are mentioned.

    Thankyou so much for this documentation. My partner Gertjan Assies born 14/04/1969 is the son of Jans Assies. Max Assies was a family member and we have visited his grave in Bloemendaal many a time. This article ofcourse relates not only to Markus Assis – Max but also to his Grandfather and Great GrandFather. We still cannot find his Resistance Cross that he was posthumously awarded…. this post I wrote on 3/01/2025

    We really would like to know more about ‘Sanner’, who whe was, where he lived, what happened to him after the war and and for what reason Jans Assies was arrested ??
