Dooren, Pieter Hermanus Everhardus van, born 24-02-1899 in Vlaardingen
, Groningen, Oosterhaven 10 ZZ-1, the son of Andries van Dooren and Helena Petronella, born Suttrop (07-05-1876, Schiedam). Pieter was married with Maria Dekker (22-02-1899 – 01-03-1983). The couple had three children. Pieter was the Director of the Secondary Technical School of Arts and Maritime Studies. Dutch Reformed. Van Dooren was a member of the resistance.
According to his card in the resistance archive, he was an important figure in the educational resistance. Furthermore, the resistance card states: ‘Received KP at home’. Many people in hiding were also sheltered by him, and he was involved in the distribution of illegal literature. The family celebrated the New Year together at home. Around eleven o’clock in the evening, the phone rang. Because Mrs. Van Dooren didn’t trust the situation, she told her husband to escape thru the back of the house. He wasn’t in favor of that, because abandoning his wife and children was beneath his dignity.

Van Dooren was shot dead by the ‘wrong’ policeman Stienus Bertus van Wijnen (19-07-1906 Rotterdam – 26-09-1979 Brunssum).
The resistance map is not clear about the location where this occurred. Both the victim’s house and the corner of Damsterdiep and Petrus Campersingel by the pharmacy are mentioned on the map. Without regaining consciousness, Van Dooren passed away at 1:00 AM. The murder of him was one of the six Silbertanne murders, which were carried out in retaliation following the liquidation of SD employe Anne Jannes Elsinga (22-09-1908, Slochteren),
head of the special investigation department in Groningen and assisted the Sicherheitsdienst (SD) in that capacity. Elsinga fanatically hunted Jews, hiding people, and illegal workers. on New Year’s morning in Groningen.Netherlands,
The Silbertanne murders on New Year’s Eve 1943 took place in retaliation for the liquidation of the Groningen collaborator Anne Jannes Elsinga by the resistance. Out of revenge, SD members from the Scholtenhuis and Dutch Waffen-SS front soldiers on leave murdered six anti-German Groningers.
On Wednesday, 03-11-1943, around 10:30 PM, an assassination attempt is carried out in Nieuwstraat, Harlingen, on the chief of the municipal police of Harlingen, Chief Lieutenant Stienus Bertus van Wijnen (36 years old). He is hit by four to six bullets, is severely injured, but survives the attack. For the actual attack, two hiding young men from Harlingen of the KP Sexbierum are designated: Gerrit Schuil and Gerben Désire Oswald.

On September 22-09-1949, the first session of the criminal case against Van Wijnen begins before the Special Criminal Chamber in Assen. Two more sessions follow on 27/10 and 3/11, along with a psychiatric examination by Chr. v.d. Ree from Assen. He is declared fully accountable.
Van Wijnen Trial, Assen 1949 He does not allow himself to be defended during the trial and adopts a very brazen attitude. He demands ‘full acquittal and immediate release’ because, according to him, he was merely fulfilling his duty, “with the elimination of any personal feeling.” There is no question of any form of regret or remorse.
On 16-02-1950, the demand for a life sentence, deprivation of the right to vote, and the possibility of holding public office follows. The death penalty is not demanded because consideration is given to the complex position of police officers.
On 02-03-1950, the Special Criminal Chamber of Assen delivers a verdict in the case and imposes a life sentence as requested. The sentence is converted to 22 years in 1959. With deductions, there would still be 8 years remaining (1945 – 1967). It is unclear when the release took place. Wijnen died,age 73, in Brunssum on 26-09-1979. Van Wijnen never showed remorse and married twice more.
Pieter Hermanus Everhardus van Dooren passed away, age 44 in 01-01-1944 in Groningen and is buried at the Dutch War Graves Southern Cemetery, Smeetslandsedijk 12, 3077 AN Rotterdam, Section: 1. Row: 10. Grave: 10.
