Grolman was in the fields of World War II
with this Division and promoted to Lieutenant General on 01-11-1944. The youngest Lieutenant General in WWII with 36, was Theodor “Tolsdorf the Mad” Tolsdorff.
He is assigned as commander of the Army Group Süd, under Generaloberst der Infanterie, Johannes Friessner and ends the war as commander of the 4th Cavalry Division, he succeeded Generalleutnant der Artillerie, Rudolf Holste
and lands in US captivity until his release on 31-03-1948. After the war Grolmann works in the German Bundestag, as State Secretary and he discharged on 14-07-1961, after being accused of a homosexual relation with a waiter pupil.Von Grolman was married to Renate Katharina von Cramon (1906–2003), and the marriage gave birth to five children.

After discussions about his homosexuality he tried a suicide with a zyankali capsule in his office, but he failed. Until the end of his life, Grolman lived in seclusion with his family in retirement,
Grolmann at the old age of 87 died, on 18-01-1977, in Hanover and is buried with his wife Renate, born Cramon, who died old age 96 on 05-04-2003, on the cemetery of Seelhorst in Handover.
