Semrau, Paul, born on 12-11-1915 in Eylan, West Prussia, , grew up in the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany. Paul joined the military service of the Luftwaffe in 1936. Following training, he was posted in Hermann Göring’s  Luftwaffe (did you know) night fighter Luftwaffe. Semrau was credited with 46 nocturnal aerial victories, claimed in 350 combat missions. Paul Semrau joined the long distance night fighter service, Fernnachtjagd, as a former destroyer pilot of Kampfgeschwader 30  under command of Oberstleutnant Walter Loebel  in July 1940.  Loebel died September 06-09-1941, age 39, near Smolensk/Russia, Soviet Union).  Semrau took command of the 3rd Staffel of Nachtjagdgeschwader 2  in the fall of 1940. He fought in the Battle of Britain (see Bomber Arthur Harris and in the Siege of Malta.Malta Beauforts
 Hauptmann Semrau received the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross after 160 missions on 07-10-1942. Promoted to Major, he took command of the 4th Gruppe of Nachtjagdgeschwader 6,  under command of von Major Fritz Schaffer, Night Fighter Squadron 6 in June 1943. After two months he was transferred again, taking command of the 3rd Gruppe of NJG 2. In November 1944 he became the Geschwaderkommodore of NJG 2 File:Nachtjagd badge.svg.

Death and burial ground of Semrau, Paul.

    Paul Semrau was shot down and killed in action on factory flight with his crew, Oberfeldwebel Hantusch and Fahnenjunker-Oberfeldwebel Behrens, of Junker Ju 88 G-6, when he was intercepted during the landing approach at Coesfeld by F/Lt K.S. Sleep of No. 402 Squadron RCAF on 08-02-1945, age 29.  Paul Semrau is buried on the war cemetery of Ysselstein in the Netherlands. Close by is buried the first killed German General

 during Operation Market Garden, Friedrich Wilhelm Enno Kussin. He was posthumously awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves on 17-04-1945. He was the 841st member of the German armed forces to be so honored.
